FC Erzgebirge Aue is a football club in Germany. The club's home base is the Erzgebirgsstadion in Aue.
The club was founded on March 4, 1946 under the name Sportgemeinschaft Aue. After changes in sponsorship, the name was changed to BSG Pneumatik Aue (named after the main sponsor: a local construction company) in 1949, Zentra Wismut Aue in 1950 and SC Wismut Aue in 1951.
In the early years the team performed very well and in 1954 the East German government decided that the nearby city of Chemnitz - then Karl Marx Stadt - deserved a good club. Due to heavy protest, only the name was changed to SC Wismut Karl Marx Stadt and the club continued to play in Aue. In 1963 Karl Marx Stadt got his own team - namely FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, the current Chemnitzer FC - and the club name was changed again to BSG Wismut Aue.
For some time the club continued to perform well in the DDR-Oberliga, but without a championship. Yet history is being made, because no other team has played so many games in the East German league. In 1985 Aue was allowed to compete for the UEFA Cup. However, in the first round, Dnieper already lost to Dnipropetrovsk. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, the name was renamed FC Wismut Aue in 1990. A few years later, in 1993, the current name - FC Erzgebirge Aue - was adopted. The name Erzgebirge (ore mountain) refers to the mountain range in which the city of Aue is located.
In the renewed football system in Germany, Aue started playing in the Amateur Oberliga Nordost/Süd (III), later renamed Regionalliga Nord (III). After a surprising championship in 2003, the club was promoted to the 2. Bundesliga, but was relegated to the newly formed 3. Liga in the 2007/2008 season.
In the 2009-2010 season, the club took second place in the third Bundesliga (with an average of over 9,000 spectators), thus forcing promotion to the second Bundesliga.
In the 2010/2011 season, the club got off to a good start in the 2.Bundesliga with a first place almost halfway through the season. The club remained unbeaten for 22 home games, a record in club history and a record in German professional football. In the 2014/15 season, the club was relegated to the 3. Liga again. A season later, promotion to the 2. Bundesliga again followed. Aue then maintains itself at this level, although promotion relegation matches against Karlsruher SC were needed in the 2017-2018 season.
