The 2. Bundesliga 2007/08 was the 34th season of the second level of the German football championship. It started on August 10, 2007 and ended on May 18, 2008. In the 306 games played (regular season), a total of 872 times was scored, averaging 2.85 goals per game.
Borussia Mönchengladbach finished first in the league, returning to the highest level in Germany. The team of the Limburg trainer-coach Jos Luhukay beat SV Wehen Wiesbaden (3-0) on May 7, thereby securing promotion to the Bundesliga. Mönchengladbach was relegated to the second level last season.
The German club had a Dutch touch this season. Besides Lukuhay, former Feyenoorder Patrick Paauwe, Roel Brouwers (ex-Roda JC), club top scorer Rob Friend (ex-SC Heerenveen), Sharbel Touma (ex-FC Twente) and former Ajax player Nando Rafael also defended the club colors of the five-time national champion ( 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976 and 1977).
Following Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim also forced promotion to the Bundesliga. The club won 5-0 against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on the final day of the competition, so it could no longer be overtaken by competitors 1. FSV Mainz 05 and SC Freiburg.
Hoffenheim's promotion was remarkable. Last season, the formation was promoted to the second Bundesliga from the Regionalliga. Now the association, together with Mönchengladbach and Köln, 1. FC Nürnberg, MSV Duisburg and Hansa Rostock, relieved at the highest German level.
