After the club entered the Bundesliga in 1965, coach Hennes Weisweiler led a young team into the club's most successful period. The club won the national championships five times in eight seasons, won the German Cup and the UEFA Cup twice.
On the last day of the 1977/78 season, 1. FC Köln had as many points as Borussia Mönchengladbach, but Cologne had ten more goals in their goal balance than Mönchengladbach. On that day, Cologne played against the already relegated FC St. Pauli and Mönchengladbach played against Borussia Dortmund. 1. FC Cologne really only needed a simple victory at an already relegated club, but things went differently. In the break it was 0-2 for Cologne in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli, but Mönchengladbach was already 6-0 ahead after 45 minutes. Mönchengladbach eventually won 12-0 against Dortmund, which is the highest victory ever in the German Bundesliga to this day. But because Cologne had scored 5-0 in the meantime, Cologne became champion.
In the 1980s Borussia Mönchengladbach played structurally in the sub-tier of the Bundesliga, but no awards were won. This lasted until 1995 when the club managed to win the German Cup. The club even relegated to the second Bundesliga, but came back in 2001. From February 1, 2007 Jos Luhukay was head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Venlo resident took over the duties of Heynckes, who resigned after thirteen games without a victory. In the 2006/2007 season, Borussia became last, so it played in the second Bundesliga in the 2007/2008 season. On May 7, 2008, the club was promoted back to the Bundesliga.
During the 2010/11 season, the Swiss Lucien Favre was appointed head coach of the club. Under Favre, Borussia Mönchengladbach survived the relationship round against VfL Bochum. In the 2011/12 season, the team achieved a final place in the top half of the standings (4th) for the first time since the 1995/96 season and has maintained this since then (8th, 6th, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 9th, 5th, 4th).
