FC Bayern Munich hired a new trainer in the summer of 2009. Success coach Louis van Gaal became champion in the Netherlands with AZ and then exchanged the club for FC Bayern. Van Gaal quickly made an impression with his knowledge of the German language, but the first results were disappointing. The coach made some remarkable choices. Luca Toni soon fell out of favor and goalkeeper Miroslav Klose was allowed to sit on the bench more often than he liked. Despite everything, the board remained behind the coach and with success, it turned out. Bayern increasingly put beautiful football on the mat and regularly won with high marks. FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen became the biggest competitors in the competition. In the first round, Bayern always played a draw against both teams.
In the return round, Bayern Munich took the longest. Bayern went on to win 2-3 on the field of Bremen. Arjen Robben, who had played football for Real Madrid a season earlier, scored the winning goal as often. The win was a sporting blow to Werder Bremen. Schalke 04 thus became the biggest attacker. But even now Bayern was going to win on the field of the direct competitor. It was a loaded match in which Bayern was 0-2 in a few minutes thanks to goals from Franck Ribéry and seasonal revelation Thomas Müller. Hamit Altıntop received another red card, but Louis van Gaal's team also remained standing with one man less.
Bayern won 3-1 against VfL Bochum on the penultimate matchday, while Schalke 04 lost to Werder Bremen. This gave Bayern a three-point lead and was almost mathematically certain of the league title. Bayern's goal difference was so high that Schalke 04 no longer stood a chance. On the last day of play, Bayern finished. The club went on to win at the bottom of the league, Hertha BSC and thus captured the 22nd national title.
On May 15, the record cup winner captured the DFB Pokal for the fifteenth time. On May 22, Bayern played the final of the UEFA Champions League. It was a surprise to many that Bayern had come this far on the champion ball, as the Germans were certainly not a favorite before the tournament. The Germans had to compete against Internazionale and lost 0-2. As a result, Inter and not Bayern took the treble (champion, cup and Champions League).
