In the 2008/09 season, AZ played in the Eredivisie and the tournament for the KNVB cup. Because of the 11th place in the 2007/08 season, AZ did not play in a European context.
AZ became champion of the Netherlands for the second time in its history this season. Under the leadership of Louis van Gaal, AZ lost the first 2 games of the season to remain unbeaten for 28 league games. The team also set a long series without goals. In total, the goal remained clean for 939 minutes. AZ qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history.
In the KNVB cup, AZ was eliminated in the quarterfinals by NAC Breda.
As of this season, the capacity of the stadium is variable. This means: when AZ is still active in a European context, the stadium will retain its old capacity of 17,023 seats. After all, the UEFA regulations prescribe that a stadium must only consist of seats if it is used in a tournament organized by UEFA. However, if AZ has no (or no longer) European obligations, the visitor section, section L, will consist of standing places, which will increase the total capacity to 17,250 places.
