After the European Championship 2008, Karel Brückner took over as national coach. With a draw against Italy in a friendly match and a 3-1 win against France in the first World Cup qualifier, things seemed to be going in the right direction. However, a sobering soon followed when they lost 2-0 to Lithuania on the second day of play and then they were drawn against the Faroe Islands. After this they got back together but only finished third in the group. A second consecutive European Championship was again not for the Austrians. A memorable 4-4 was played against Belgium in Brussels, Martin Harnik made the equalizer in the 93rd minute. On the last day of play it would appear that if Belgium had won, they would have gone to the barrages instead of Turkey. In the last game against France, David Alaba made his debut for the country at the age of seventeen, becoming the youngest international ever for the Alpine country. In November 2011, Marcel Koller became the first Swiss to become national coach for Austria.
