Arsenal FC were champions of the Premier League for the second time at the end of the 2001/2002 season, with 87 points and a 7-point lead over Liverpool. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was recruited, but the Dutchman struggled to secure a place at left back. Arsenal went shopping at regional rivals Tottenham Hotspur and bought out captain Sol Campbell. Campbell immediately became the leader of Arsenal's defence. Tony Adams and Lee Dixon retired as footballers at the end of the season. Adams played his entire career for the club and was captain since 1987, Dixon played 14 seasons for the club.
