Arsenal FC were champions of the Premier League for the second time at the end of the 2001/2002 season, with 87 points and a 7-point lead over Liverpool. It was the twelfth league title in club history. Arsenal won the Premier League mainly by having an unbeaten run of 21 games, since December 23, 2001 it has not lost a game. Thierry Henry scored 24 goals to win his first Premier League Golden Boot. Freddie Ljungberg was voted player of the year by his colleagues and Arsène Wenger was named coach of the year. Arsenal took a double this season because they also won the FA Cup. In the fifth round Blackburn Rovers were knocked out of the League Cup, with heavy 4-0 figures. Blackburn Rovers would go on to win the secondary cup later in the season. They had already been eliminated after the group stage(s) of the UEFA Champions League and therefore no longer played a role in the knockout stage. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was recruited, but the Dutchman struggled to secure a place at left back. Arsenal went shopping at regional rivals Tottenham Hotspur and bought out captain Sol Campbell. Campbell immediately became the leader of Arsenal's defence. Tony Adams and Lee Dixon retired as footballers at the end of the season. Adams played his entire career for the club and was captain since 1987, Dixon played 14 seasons for the club.
