Arsenal FC closed the 2008/2009 season of the Premier League with a total of 72 points, making it fourth at a large distance from Dutch champion Manchester United. It won twenty games, played 12 times in a tie and lost six times in the league, so for the fourth time in a row it missed out on a direct qualification for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. In the FA Cup, Arsène Wenger's troops reached the semi-finals, but they lost Chelsea 1–2. In the League Cup, Arsenal was already eliminated in the quarterfinals - on the field of second-division Burnley it became 2–0. The UEFA Champions League made it to the semifinals, the best result since 2006. Defending champion Manchester United popped the club 1–0 and 1–3. After Gilberto Silva's departure to Panathinaikos in Greece and goalkeeper Jens Lehmann to VfB Stuttgart in Germany, there were only two Invincibles left; vice-captain Kolo Touré and rear left Gaël Clichy. Youth products Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere made their debut. With Frenchman Samir Nasri and Russian Andrej Arshavin, who performed strongly at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, trainer Arsène Wenger got a playmaker and technical dribbler who had to provide ideas.
